This coming March 17th is a somewhat important day for the direction of the franchise. On 3/17/19 Eli Manning is due a $5 Million roster bonus which makes about 50% of his pay guaranteed as apposed to about just 27%. This is sort of a no turning back point for the Giants and Eli. Negotiations can happen afterward but he will already have over $11Mil deposited in his bank account whether he plays or not. At this point Eli holds most of the cards and I doubt he's going to be willing to play the season for an additional $5-7Mil to save the Giants a few $Mil.
That being said, I anticipate that any negotiations between the Giants and Eli will be completed in the next 5 weeks or not at all. The fact that this roster bonus is due on 3/17 is heavily in Eli's favor because it comes before the draft. The Giants wont have a chance to see how the draft pans out before negotiating with Eli. A dangerous scenario would be to cut him and have a team jump us in the draft to take our QB1.
Also, Eli's wife gave birth to a son (Charles) Yesterday. His personal life I'm sure will influence his future as a Football player. Will he be willing to take a pay cut? Contract extension? or possibly be motivated to retire?... Only he knows. I would think that at this point, playing for another team is out of the question for him.
Personally, I would like to see him take a bit of a pay cut and play out the 2019 season (or part of it ). I think it will be important for the development of a new QB to watch and learn from Eli (Even if he feels unobligated to mentor). I don't really like the idea of extending his contract unless the scouts really don't see a QB they like in this years draft, even then I'm sure we can find a cheaper bridge QB at a lower price or throw a 2020 draft pick right into the fire. Our star positional players aren't getting any younger and unfortunately I don't think Eli has another Super Bowl in him.
