In a massive purge that's particularly hit the Defense and seen JJP, Vernon, Snacks, Cromartie, Collins and several "lessers" hit the highway, Jenkins and his 14 million dollar a year salary has survived. Suprisingly so and, one might say, unaccountably so. The notion is widely promulgated: The Giants will be starting a rookie backfield and it will take time to jell. Bethea has played in Belchter's system and is a savvy vet, Haley was credible as a rookie LAST YEAR and might man the slot, Pepper's is a three year vet who Gettleman salivated over and was the prize he wanted in the OBJ trade. And then there's the 14 million dollar man who is coming off two bad years and has , generally speaking , been an under-performer. In any instance, we likely only be starting one rook, unless one of Love, Ballantine or Beal are brilliant and force there way into the lineup . Jenkins can be cut and the cap hit is not bad. I suspect that if the current edition isn't highly competitive and in the hunt, he'll be gone to a contender for a draft pick during the year. The question is: Why did he survive and is he part of a greater strategy and plan?
AFTERWORD: Two years later and it's still hard to comprehend...How could a defense with that long list of all pro types in the prime have been so lousy. JJP, Snacks, Jenkins, Collins, Cromartie. I accept the fact that I'm wrong a lot but never as much so as with that 2016 Team. In all my years of being a fan, that edition remains a puzzlement.

What were you wrong about? The 2016 team went 11-5. The defense won a number of those games for them. They just got tired of carrying a sputtering offense led by a washed-up statue of a quarterback (I still love you, Eli) through 3-and-out after 3-and-out. It’s understandable. When an organization refuses to address a problem that affects everybody, it demoralizes those that are doing their jobs. Then you bring in a “leader” that doubles-down on the problem, and, well...
"The thing that makes him (Saquon Barkley) different is he has the feet and speed of a little guy, with the power and strength of a big guy," Gettleman said. "That’s what makes him so darn unique. He’s different. It’s like he was touched by the hand of God, frankly."

My guess is that Jenkins tells Gettleman what he wants to hear. I think it's clear Gettleman makes decisions based on personality as much as on talent. Players that follow the company line like Eli get to stay no matter how overpaid they are. Outspoken players like Collins, Beckham and previously Josh Norman are gone despite their talent. Some think that's a good thing....I disagree. I hate the Cowboys but agree with the way Jimmy Johnson did things when he was coaching. He was really hard on the mediocre players and would cut bad players for the smallest of reasons just to make an example of them but his stars could do whatever they wanted with immunity (including stabbing a teammate in the neck).

My bad, the 2017 team is the edition i had such high hopes for.
I think we were all surprised by the 2017 season. Part of why the defense did so much worse is that Vernon was injured early and missed 4 games, Jenkins and Apple had injury and /or attitude issues (Jenkins only started 8 games. Apple only started 7), Casillas went on injured reserve after 8 games. I also agree with bronxpinstrips that the offense sucking hurt the defense. Our offense scored a total of 13 points in the fist two games. There was one point I think in game two where the defense got an interception but then on the very next play Eli threw an interception and the defense was right back out on the field. I also think the team played better than their talent level in 2016 and that got us more optimistic than we should have been. As someone from ESPN said "The 2016 Giants were a flawed team with great luck; the 2017 Giants are a flawed team with terrible luck."
I don't find it surprising at all. Jenkins contract did not make him attractive as a trade target by other teams and his cap hit prevented the Giants from outright releasing him if they wanted to. With all the youth entering the secondary this season, vets like Jenkins and Bethea will go along way in developing those kids into legit NFL players. This will be his last season with the Giants. He'll be playing for a new contract in 2020.

Gettleman traded All-Pro Jason Pierre-Paul for a 3rd-round pick. He traded All-Pro Snacks Harrison for a 5th-round pick. And he let All-Pro Landon Collins go for...well, nothing.
So...why did he hang on to Janoris Jenkins again?
"The thing that makes him (Saquon Barkley) different is he has the feet and speed of a little guy, with the power and strength of a big guy," Gettleman said. "That’s what makes him so darn unique. He’s different. It’s like he was touched by the hand of God, frankly."

As I stated in the previous post, his contract would have been prohibitive to making a deal.

I find giantsrock's explanation more plausible.

Maybe, I think they that they think that's he's mercurial and will perform this year when he's playing for a contract and when he's surrounded by a positive ambiance. I think that Beltcher's system needs cover corners and if they have them they can employee a variety of stunts and blitzes. So they got a safety in Peppers who has great blitz potential and they're going to be fielding two superb (it is to be hoped) cover corners. And picking up Golden is consistent with that plan.

This is what happens with big money free agent contracts. You sign these guys to inflated escalating contracts in their prime and expect them to keep playing at their best or better and never get injured. Meanwhile, their motivation seems to go down and their lifestyle changes once they're guaranteed to be rich. There's not much you can do until the guaranteed money drains out of their deals. You cant cut him and you cant trade him unless he exceeds his value. You just hope for the best.
In 2016, his first year with the Giants he had the best year of his career and things looked bright. In 2017 he got suspended 1 game and ended the season on IR. He's never been the same. In 2018 his $20Mil guaranteed money prevented cutting him and his average play combined with a $14M/yr contract prevented trading him. In 2019 his guaranteed money still prevents cutting him, now $7Mil and his average play still combined with a $14M/yr contract prevents trading him. Plus it will be good for our young guys to watch and learn. In 2020 he will be in the last year of his deal and all but $3.5M of his bonuses will have been paid but he will still be a cap hit of $14M. This is when the ball is finally back in Gettleman's court.
I think with his contract winding down it will light a fire under his ass this year. He should now be motivated to increase his perceived value knowing that he will end up a free agent at the end of this year or next year. My guess is that we'll see a better Jackrabbit in 2019.
C'mon that's not even trying for impartiality. Several writers reported that it was a miracle that he was able to unload Vernon's contract. And he brought back a wonderful player at a position of extreme need who has not missed a game over his career and is a great leader. Vernon was always hurt for us and moreover I think golden and Lorenzo Carter are going to be better than him at the same position. Vernon May well indeed flourish with Myles Garrett and some other Talent the Browns have. But he was not a number one and I don't think was ever going to produce here. Meantime, the addition of a top professional and producer like Ziegler changes the whole bloody team. How you find a way, directly or indirectly, to fault to gettleman in that apparently lopsided trade is beyond me The snacks trade is harder to justify. But I think we are playing young people out of position because of snacks. I also believe he was potentially more destructive than Jack Rabbit. He was a two-down player making 12 million next year plan on a 40 million-dollar contract with 24 million guaranteed and in eight million dollar signing bonus. Jack rabbits contract doesn't look very favorable either but at least he's a 4 down player. And snacks is already Holding Out for more money and likely would have here.

Jenkins quit on the giants, did Snacks ever do that ? Did Snacks get suspended for not coming back on time ? Nope, he didn't . But Jenkins did both of those things, and still is here. That means the locker room stuff is a double standard.
