This guy ran a 4.5 40 yard dash at the combine, pretty good for a guy who is 250. Long arms.
Overview Carter was a five-star prospect and one of the most heralded players in the nation when he was recruited by Georgia but he never made the impact expected of him as a Bulldog. However, Carter played with increased toughness and confidence this year and his NFL potential began to reassert itself once again. Carter is an outside linebacker in a 3-4 or 4-3 with sideline-to-sideline range and the tools to become a productive edge rusher in sub-packages. He needs to add more bulk, but he is a future NFL starter.
Strengths Tremendously long and rangy Long strider with ability to cover ground quickly and close on wide flowing plays Effective use of arm length Consistent punch and separation against blocks Takes contain responsibilities seriously Plus quickness in lateral slides Frame unravels to catch running backs who think they are in the clear Uses long-arm stab to access blocker's frame and set the edge Build-up speed creates downfield angles to the sideline to challenge ball carriers and receivers after catch Active as tackler to search for and yank at the football Forced and recovered six career fumbles Has edge-threatening get-off Uses slinky upper body to slide around blocker's punch Flashes talent to flip hips around the arc and flatten to the quarterback Posted 15 career sacks
Weaknesses Gangly frame begging for more weight and muscle Thin legs offer subpar base Long tackles can neutralize his length and push him around Not ready to handle downhill rushing attack headed for his doorstep Herd tackler with just moderate solo numbers More of a straight-line mover than expected Rush can be too easily stalled when rushing as an end Slow to activate hands as a pass rusher Will need to develop rush plan and hand usage to counter his lack of play strength Not enough boom for conversion of speed to power
He is perfect for a OLB in a 3-4. In Nickle packages I can see Vernon Carter Ogletree Martin and Tomlinson all in there. Maybe Hill. I think Hill and Tomlinson will play that strong DE and nickels snacks out Tomlinson Hill in with Vernon Martin Carter Ogletree in and the DE that got suspended 4 games.
There were a handful of Mocks on this board that had him. Good job. There were also a handful of analysts mocks that had him to us. I always put down Jewell ILB from Iowa. Because he is a 3 down linebacker and would look real nice next to Ogletree but I read up on this kid and he sounds like a perfect 3-4 OLB. Poor mans Floyd or Barr
If there is one trait that has eluded most Giants linebacker's in the past 10 years it has been lateral speed. With the Carter pick, the Giants have a guy who can seal the outside neatly (and play middle cover!). The only knock on Carter (aside from bulk and physical) is that he's an under-achiever. He is a streak player who can be caught napping in a high optempo game. When he's on, this guy is a day-one starting NFL linebacker... hopefully, he makes the mental and maturity leap to the NFL successfully. The Giants REALLY need production from their linebackers.
lot of linebackers now and all should be more productive with less space to cover.
Meanwhile, a lot of tall drinks of water at DE better suited for a 4-3 than 3-4.
Curious.... Like Whom?
I question if the Wynn, Okwara, etc type have the body of a 3-4 DE and can win at the POA inside. At LB I still like Goodson and Munson and now with Vernon at LB, the additions of Ogletree, Mauro and the rest I'd say the linebackers look good.
Thanks for the video, boondocksaint88. As you said, against one of the best OL in college football last year, a line that just had two guys drafted in the top 10. And he destroyed them. He looks like the real deal at linebacker; can't believe he was there in the third round.
daytripper: NFT= non football topic? i didnt know that. im old and trying to keep up lol

rodney27: You're right about the fumbling problem, tl65taog. I just don't think it can be fixed. He had in preseason, has it at a record pace now, and had the same problem at Duke. If he hasn't fixed it in all that time...I just don't know if he can.

tl65taog: yes the fumbling problem has to be fixed, but you have to be fair about it
